Thomas Leiper, a Scottish-born tobacco merchant, constructed America’s first working railroad in 1809, using ox-drawn cars to transport stone from his quarry along Ridley Creek. Leiper used 1 Sproul Lane as a guest house for visitors to his nearby estate, located a mile north.
