Key Biscayne K-8 Center was founded in 1952 as Key Biscayne Elementary School and was later known as Key Biscayne Community School before taking its present name. In 1998 it became, according to the district, the first school in the district converted to a K-8 center, and an $8.3 million three-story middle-school facility with 25 classrooms was completed for the 2005-2006 school year, when all five portable classrooms were removed. It is part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, is assigned to the district's Central region and belongs to the Coral Gables Senior High School feeder pattern. The school received the U.S. Department of Education's 2006 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools award, has been designated a Florida Department of Education School of Excellence, holds a Fairchild Challenge Award, a SECME Award and a STEM/STEAM designation, and is a No Place for Hate school. Its mascot is the Shark and its colors are navy blue and gold.
