About New World School of the Arts

New World School of the Arts opened in fall 1987, created by an act of the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts. Its main building is a former AT&T communications building, first used in 1990 after a fire destroyed the original administration headquarters; earlier classes met in scattered downtown locations. The school is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida, and its academic programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It was named a National Blue Ribbon School for 1992-93 and a National Magnet School of Excellence in 2022. It was designated a Florida Department of Education School of Excellence for 2023-24 and again for 2024-25. Alumni include Cote de Pablo, Tarell Alvin McCraney and Robert Battle. Its mascot is the Pigeon and its colors are cyan, magenta and yellow.
