Ada Merritt K-8 Center was built in 1923 as the first junior high school in South Florida. The school sits in the heart of Miami's Little Havana. It closed in the 1970s, and the building was used as a Job Corps center until it was demolished. A replica of the Spanish colonial-style structure was rebuilt in 2003, retaining a main entrance guarded by two lion statues, and the replica was then incorporated into a larger structure that became the present campus, which the school describes as having Mediterranean architecture. It was named after a pioneer Miami educator. The campus is served by the district's Central Region office, and the Florida Department of Education named it a School of Excellence for 2023-24 and for 2024-25. It has also received a Magnet Schools of America Merit Award.

How We Ranked the Schools

Every school on this page is rated 1 to 10 by the Houzeo Test Score Index (HTSI), built entirely from Florida Department of Education results. Three measures are combined, and each school is compared only with Florida schools of its own level, statewide. A 10 means the school is in the top 10 percent of Florida schools at its level, not just the top 10 percent of the area you are looking at.

Years used: the 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 assessment and school grades results. Where a graduation rate applies, it uses the 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 four-year cohorts.

Achievement

Results on FAST, Statewide Science and the end-of-course exams, scored on all five achievement levels rather than pass rate alone.

Growth

Learning gains from FDOE's School Grades data, including the lowest-performing 25 percent of students. Of the measures every school has, this is the one less tied to neighborhood income.

Outcomes

Middle schools: high school credit earned through acceleration. High schools: the four-year graduation rate plus AP, IB, AICE, dual enrollment and industry certifications. Elementary schools use Achievement and Growth only, because Florida does not report an outcomes measure for them.

Growth carries a large share at every level on purpose, and at elementary and high schools it is the largest single share. Test scores alone tend to reward schools whose students arrive already ahead. Learning gains measure what happened during the year.

Not in the score

Parent reviews, other websites' ratings, student demographics, income data, and any information about who attends. Schools with too few tested students are shown as Not rated, never scored as zero. An elementary school with no learning gains published is Not rated, never rated on test scores alone. Private schools do not take Florida's state assessments and are not rated.

Test scores are correlated with household income in the area a school draws from. Income and demographics are never inputs to HTSI, but the correlation is real, and a rating should not be read as a measure of teaching quality, school safety, or whether a school is the right fit for one particular child.

Recalculated each year when FDOE publishes new results. Florida's official A to F school grade is shown alongside every rating.

K-8, 6-12 and other combination schools

A school whose grades cross those boundaries is its own category. It is compared with other Florida combination schools, not with elementary, middle or high schools, and its three measures are weighted by the mix of students it actually tests: the share of its tested students in grades 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 10 sets how much of each profile above it gets.

731of the 3,393 rated Florida schools are combination schools

a well-known K-8 will appear on its own list rather than alongside elementary or middle schools.
