54 E 1St St

Built in 1910, this six-story prewar cooperative is an intimate walk-up with 16 residences reflecting classic East Village loft character. The narrow boutique building features high ceilings, oversized windows, original hardwood floors, exposed brick and traditional moldings in many units. Apartment types are largely studio and junior one-bedroom configurations, some reimagined as loft-like or duplex layouts with creative storage and custom millwork. Kitchens are commonly renovated with stone or granite counters and modern appliances; several units include washer/dryer hookups or combos. Commonly cited building strengths include a planted garden or quiet garden-facing exposures, a maintained mosaic-tiled entry, and a superintendent on site. There is no elevator; units are reached by stairs. Pet ownership is allowed with board approval and the co-op board is described as engaged and financially sound with relatively low maintenance charges and a flexible sublet policy. The property sits on a tree-lined East Village block with immediate access to multiple subway lines, Citi Bike, restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and grocery options, offering a quiet, urban residential experience within a highly walkable downtown neighborhood.
