Ice storms are the real risk, because freezing rain coats limbs and gutters until branches come down on rooflines. Charlotte suits families well, and the strongest school assignments concentrate in the southern half of the city. Ballantyne feeds Ardrey Kell High, ranked first among Mecklenburg County public high schools, while Myers Park offers walkable streets and a well-regarded but lower-ranked high school. You pay for the Ballantyne assignment, though, with medians running past $600,000.

Charlotte's biggest advantage is work. The metro ranked second nationally for job growth and added nearly 38,000 jobs in a year. The trade-off is that housing costs have risen alongside that demand, and traffic now costs the average driver about 48 hours a year. Housing still runs cheaper than in other major finance hubs, which is exactly why the in-migration keeps pressuring prices.
