One policy will not cover an island home, because standard Texas homeowners policies exclude wind and hail along the coast. The West End is beach-house country: newer stilt construction, canal frontage, and the island's heaviest concentration of vacation rentals. The East End puts you within walking distance of the Strand's restaurants and shops, in Victorian housing stock that comes with Landmark Commission oversight attached. The practical trade-off is rental income and water access on one side, walkability and renovation restrictions on the other.
No, Texas closings run through a title company, not a lawyer. That differs from attorney-state closings in places like Illinois and Massachusetts, where a licensed attorney has to be at the table. You can still hire one, and it's worth considering a Galveston purchase where windstorm certificates, elevation certificates, and STR registration all have to line up correctly.
