The Garden District gives you live oaks, streetcar access, and mostly higher ground along the natural levee. Bywater and Marigny trade that for a denser grid within a short ride of downtown. Check each block's elevation before you fall for the architecture.
New Orleans crime has fallen sharply, and the city's old reputation now lags the data. NOPD recorded 266 murders in 2022 against 121 in 2025, a 55% reduction. Violent crime hit its lowest level since 1969 by mid-2026, with homicides down another 26% year over year. Risk still varies block by block, so pull NOPD district data for any neighborhood you shortlist.
